Omelas Academy

A School for a Just and Sustainable Future

Omelas is a learning space for future graduates who want to pursue careers that make a difference in the world. At Omelas, we explore the big challenges of our time - climate change, extreme inequality, technological disruption and the growing divides in society - and help students understand these issues through a systems perspective. We question the status quo: What is driving our biggest crises? Why are we struggling to tackle them? Is capitalism working in favour or against our collective interest? How can we build a society that values people and the planet over profit?Omelas empowers young minds to think critically, dream boldly, and act decisively. Through knowledge, reflection and action, we inspire students to explore careers and paths that contribute to a just and sustainable world.Subscribe below to receive updates on our upcoming events.

The Tipping Points of Climate Change — and Where We Stand

Understand the challenge at hand. Our planet has limits we can't afford to cross but failure to act means we now have to deal with severe repercussions.

Is capitalism actually broken?

We have come to accept capitalism as the only way to organise our economy and society. Is capitalism serving our collective interest or is it fuelling climate change and growing inequality.

Our obsession with economic growth is deadly

Are consumers at fault for an economy that is destroying the planet and driving inequality or is our economic system and the powers that influence it really responsible? Will changing our consumer behaviour bring about change or do we need to reimagine capitalism?

'Green' tech can’t save us from climate change

We assume technology will save us. But will it? Question society's techno-optimism and if it is distracting us from the real work of change.

The Thriving World, The Wilting World, & You

Philanthropy has often been viewed as the answer. The assumption being, if capitalism's winners channeled some of their winnings to the losers, we can tackle poverty and inequality. This insightful talk explores the true nature of philanthropy and if it supports an unjust system.

How do we create a better economy?

How might we reimagine our system so that it operates within planetary boundaries and is in service of our collective interest? Here is a possible solution.

About

Our mission is to inspire 1,000,000 future graduates to commit to building a just and sustainable world by 2040.

The name Omelas comes from Ursula K. Le Guin’s short story, The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas. The story portrays a utopian society whose happiness depends on the suffering of a single child, raising profound questions about morality, justice, and the systems we uphold. At Omelas Academy, we draw on this narrative to challenge the status quo, empower young people to confront uncomfortable truths, and reimagine a world built on shared prosperity and dignity for all.The academy is facilitated by Navin Muruga and supported by a community of like-minded individuals who share a vision for a just and sustainable world.Get in touch: [email protected]
